10 Benefits of Being a Work-at-Home Mom

There is nothing much better than taking care of your family while earning at the same time. Being a work-at-home mom has a lot of advantages. Well, not working is better, but how will we survive if we won’t work, right? We wanted to help our partners bring food to the table because we often feel guilty of not working as if taking care of our children isn’t enough work, right?

Well, you can’t deny that fact. But do you want to hear the good news? There are a lot of opportunities for you to be a work-at-home mom. You can start a small business, a freelance business or you can get a work-at-home mom job.

I started my work-at-home job while I was pregnant with my son last 2016. I even started at $2 per hour with an invoice job, designing, writing articles, putting subtitles, editing Youtube videos, and also processing orders. I was so cheap back then, but I didn’t mind. All I know is I am a fat ass pregnant woman, and I can’t even get myself out of bed to go to the office. I have my maternity benefits, but it won’t be enough. I decided to open my laptop, find a work-at-home job, and I discovered that my skills are in demand in the remote world. 4 years later, I am still a work-at-home mom.

Benefits of being a work at home mom

If you are planning to get a work at home job while taking care of your kids, it sure has tons of benefits. Here are ten benefits of being a work-at-home mom

1. You can Spend more time with your family

Instead of spending two hours extra for preparation and commute, plus 8-10 hours of your day spent in the office, working at home means you spend more time with your family. You can take lunch breaks with your kids and cook food for them instead of the usual takeouts.

You may not be with them 100% because you have to focus on work, but if you manage your time wisely and with proper planning, you still spend more time with them than working outside home.

2. Fewer expenses in transportation and allowance

Being a work-at-home mom doesn’t require me to spend money on transportation (₱100) and lunch (₱100), thus my savings tripled. I can now afford my wants and needs than when I was working in the corporate world.

On top of that, I also save a lot of money from expensive coffees as I can make one for myself at home.

Though Tee and I indulge in milk teas and pizzas every now and then, it still isn’t as expensive as eating out every single day.

3. Saves money on childcare

Aside from protecting myself from mini heart attacks caused by our nanny, I can also save around ₱5,000-8,000 every month. If you choose to be a work-at-home mom, this is one of those fixed expenses you can cut off. Let’s be honest; getting a nanny is hard and expensive.

Though this may not apply to everyone as some work-at-home moms still need someone to take care of their kids.

Tee and I have three clients in total right now, and it may not sound as much to others, but it sure takes a lot of our time. Tee works almost 14 hours every day (at home), and I work 4-5 hours a day, so we take turns in taking care of Dreu. I am blessed that I can be more flexible with my time because, as a designer, I can pause anytime I want to.

4. Manage your own time

Majority of VA jobs you can get nowadays offer a lot of flexibility in your schedule. Take me, for instance, as a website designer and content creator, I get to be more flexible with my time. I am one of those who can work anytime, anywhere. However, there are some jobs like online tutors, customer service, content moderators, and some others that require you to work in a specific shift.

Still, you can do more on your lunch breaks, which wouldn’t be possible in the corporate world.

5. Take care of your household

The time you spend on commute and preparation can be spent on cleaning your house or doing laundry instead. You can now feed your family the foods they love because you have more time in your hands. You don’t have to stress out on getting help because you can manage to do it all on your own now.

Still, time management is vital.

6. Perfect for people with social anxiety

I work best when I do it alone because my social anxiety would eat me up. If everyday interactions give you crippling anxiety, being a work-at-home mom would be right for you. Virtual Assistance and freelance jobs don’t require you to be in a physical office. Being with people disrupts my ability to excel, and if I work from home, I get to be excellent in my job, and I can be very creative because my creative juices can flow freely.

7. Side Hustle

Another benefit of getting a VA job or a freelance job as a work-at-home mom is you can earn an extra income. Which is our main reason right? Living in a one-income family is hard most especially if you have kids that go to school. We can’t deny the fact that sometimes we feel guilty when our partners are the only ones working, and we don’t have a choice but stay at home because we have kids or we don’t have the degree to get an excellent job in the corporate world. So for us to help our partners in providing our family, we need to have a side hustle.

There are tons of jobs that offer part-time hours, or if you go down the freelancing path, you have full control of your hours while earning.

8. No need to dress up every day

One thing to look forward to once you become a work-at-home mom is you don’t really need to dress up every day. Of course, you have to make sure you get some shower to freshen up before you start your day. Don’t forget to put on some decent clothes too so that you’ll feel good while working. Other than that, you’re not required to put on some corporate attire.

9. Sense of Individuality

Most moms feel like they’ve lost themselves when they became a mom. We spend all our time taking care of our baby, feeding the family, and none left for ourselves. Once you become a work-at-home mom, you will feel less as “just” a mother and more of yourself. You will realize that you know a lot of things and that you can put it to good use.

We are always associated with our husbands. As if every good thing in the family is because of them, duh?

You are not just someone else’s wife/partner. You are not “just” a mother. You are a wife. You are a mother. You are you.

Once you become a work-at-home mom, you will achieve your sense of individuality, and your future self will thank you, trust me.

10. Learn new skills

Being a VA or freelancer doesn’t just require one skill. It requires a lot of skills. You need to possess at least a little bit of customer service skills, writing ability, designing skills, editing skills, and a lot more. Sometimes clients would ask you to do things you haven’t done before, and they will teach you how to do it. You will learn about it, and you can use that on your advantage. Being a work-at-home mom will be an edge for you. Learning didn’t stop when you became a mother. It starts there. And once you get a job as a VA or a freelancer, you will learn a whole lot more set of skills.

In conclusion, starting your career as a Virtual Assistant or a freelancer will be very beneficial to you and your family. Sure, you have to work on managing your time, but once you start earning at home while taking care of the kids, you will feel a sense of fulfillment and a great sense of achievement.
