If you’re looking to start being a work-at-home mom, and you have no idea what are the things that you need to have to begin with, I have made a checklist here to help you.
Just Like any other business or job, you have to make investments to get that dream job you are working so hard to achieve. It’s the same thing in having a home-based career as a work at home mom; you need to have these things to help you have a smoother transition.
Here’s a checklist to finally jumpstart your work-at-home career:
1. You need to have a reliable and fast internet connection.
The essential key to making this work is to have a reliable and fast internet connection. You can’t just rely on your mobile phone’s data if you want to work at home. In the Philippines, there are stable internet service providers in the Philippines you can get like Converge ICT, Globe, PLDT, Sky Internet, and many more. You might want to inquire with them on how you can have the internet installed at your home.
Most internet plans don’t require an initial down payment, though some might ask you for it. It is good to be prepared. This is a start-up cost, but it is essential so your home-based career can work for you.
If you already have an internet connection at home, try to test your internet speed through Speedtest or Fast to check your download and upload speed. You need to have 20mbps of download speed, at least.
You might want to check options on getting a backup internet connection as well, just in case your internet connection will act up. We know how stable our internet connection is in the Philippines, right? **pun intended
Of course, you can always go to a coffee shop to work, just in case. But if you want to check other options, Globe offers prepaid home wifi that you can use as a backup internet connection for only ₱999.00.

2. Invest in a quality computer or laptop, or both
Home-based or Virtual Assistant jobs would require you to multi-task and install some software your client uses. Investing in quality equipment would make your work at home experience smoother, plus your client would be able to get that project done on time.
You have to consider the battery life, cost and speed.
Do not invest in a laptop with less than 8GB RAM. Or you can ask someone to add more memory to the laptop but might breach the warranty.
You can check reviews on Youtube before buying your preferred laptop.
3. Get some noise-canceling headset
As moms, there are times where we can’t control when our kids scream, shout, or cry. In a high traffic environment like a home with kids, for example, it is best to get a noise-canceling headset.
This sure sounds like a luxury. I mean, I can buy ordinary headsets. Of course, you can. But if you want to be an ESL teacher or if your job requires you to call clients or have weekly meetings, you might want to consider getting a quality headset with microphone.
4. Invest in a webcam and a monitor.
Now, most clients would talk with you weekly for updates for further instructions. In this case, they will set up a video call. So if you’re using a computer, get yourself some quality webcam.
Another investment you want to have is an extra monitor. Now, this is optional, depending on your job. If your job requires a lot of multi-tasking, then stop making your life difficult and get some extra computer monitor.
5. Have a comfortable and quiet workspace
This sounds impossible if you have a kid. When I’m working, my kid usually climbs up on my chair and the table. Well, this is because we live in a small condo unit, and I don’t have a home office for now.
But your space allows, like you have an extra bedroom, use that to be a small office so you can focus and do your tasks well with fewer interruptions. As much as possible it has to be silent and soundproofed if you are living in a noisy community or there is just some noise that is hard to block.
Though you can work in your bed if you’re using a laptop, your legs and your back will kill you. Trust me, been there, done that. So get yourself some decent chair that has lumbar support to avoid back pain. It doesn’t have to be expensive as long as it’s comfortable. I got mine through Facebook Marketplace, and it only cost ₱1,900 plus delivery.

6. Get yourself a good coffee maker and strong coffee
Working at home is excellent, sure, but it also means that you are in your comfort zone. We usually associate our home as a place to rest; hence, we get tired quickly, get sleepy, and lazy. Working at home is not all rainbows and unicorns. Your greatest enemy is drowsiness and demotivation. So if caffeine wakes you up, get yourself a good cup of coffee before you start your day.
PRO-TIP: As much as possible, take a bath before working and do not work in your PJs, so you can switch to “work-mode.”
I mean, sure, one of the benefits really of being a work at home mom is working in your most comfortable clothes, but if you want to feel a bit more motivated, then get out of that PJ and dress up. You will feel more of yourself.
Aside from coffee, keep hydrated by drinking water all day. I feel so good when I have a tumbler of water with lemon on my table while working. It just feels so good.
Being a work-at-home mom is always hard at first, but as I always say, the payoff is much bigger than the sacrifice. Once you get your hard earned salary, you will love it and you won’t look back to just staying at home and not earning at the same time.
I hope this checklist would help you jumpstart your career as a work-at-home mom. Once you have your internet and computer equipment you can already start to be a work-at-home mom.
