Help Them Do the Work: Age-Appropriate Chores for Kids

Kids love to help. I actually realized this when Dreu, at 2 years old, helped wipe the mess he made when he spilled his milk. Then we wonder what’s next? Should I let my kids do chores already? What are the age-appropriate chores for a 3-year-old?

Right now, Dreu can help with a few things when we ask him to. Even most of the time he chooses to play than help, it’s important that we are teaching him to do chores, age-appropriate chores at that. We don’t want our kids to grow up thinking that someone will do the dishes for them. We want them to grow up responsible and that no matter what happens, they can stand on their own feet.

The key to making this work is to let them feel that we are not forcing them to do the chores, but it’s their job and responsibility to help with the tasks.

Age is a very important factor in determining if it’s the best time to teach them but you also have to factor in physical & emotional capability, their maturity, and even their interests.

Since we’re on quarantine, it’s a great time to teach the kids how important it is for them to help with the house chores. Learning to help with chores is just as important as learning life skills.

So, I have compiled age-appropriate chores from 2-14 years old and I hope that this can help you as much as it helped me. You can give the easiest chore to a younger age group then progress it giving the much harder chore to an older child.

  1. Pick up toys and books.
  2. Put dirty clothes in the laundry.

Right now, we are already transitioning the chores from the 2-3 year old chores to the 4 year old chores. And trust me when I say that I can see a smile on my son’s chin every time he gets to help with the chores.

Remember, always put your kid’s maturity in mind when handing them tasks. Some learn fast, some learn at their own pace.

And, of course, if you think your child can do more than these listed age-appropriate chores, you do you. You know what’s best for them and you know what skills they need in growing up.
